The role of the Shariah Committee will be to provide guidance on the fund’s operations in adherence to Shariah principles.
The Fund will operate in line with Shariah principles in terms of investment qualification and capital structuring, consistent with the targeted objective of serving the investment needs of Shariah-based investors.
For its Shariah compliance process, the Fund has appointed a panel of established Shariah Scholars to advise the Fund on all Shariah matters and to approve its investment activities. The Shariah Committee will provide oversight to ensure that all investments adhere with Shariah principles and comprise the following members:
Dr. Ashraf Bin Md Hashim
Dr. Ashraf Bin Md Hashim holds a PhD in Islamic Law from Birmingham University, U.K. MA, Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh (Jordan) and BA, Shariah (Madinah). Dr Ashraf is the CEO of International Shari’ah Academy for Islamic Finance Consultancy (ISRA Consultancy) and a Professor at the International Centre of Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF). Currently, Dr Ashraf is the Chairman of the Shari’ah Committee of Bursa Malaysia and a member of the Shari’ah Advisory Council of Bank Negara Malaysia (Central Bank of Malaysia), Securities Commission of Malaysia and also the National Fatwa Council of Malaysia. He is also advising other Islamic financial institutions in Malaysia and abroad. He was a Chevening Fellow (2007) at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, United Kingdom.
Ustaz Mustazah Bahari
Ustaz Mustazah Bahari holds a Masters in Usuluddin-al-Quran & Sunnah from UKM, Malaysia and a BA (Hons) Shariah from Madina University. He is a member of the Association of Shariah Advisors Malaysia, Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, a resource person for the Shariah Court in Singapore and Shariah Advisor to AEP Investment Management. He is also a member of the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) Appeal Board.
Ustaz Mohd Kamal Mokhtar
Ustaz Mohd Kamal Mokhtar is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Finance from International Islamic University of Malaysia. He holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Islamic Studies and Prophetic Traditions from Islamic University of Medina and a Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences (Botany, Zoology) from National University of Singapore. Ustaz Kamal is a Consultant and Shariah Advisor at SHAPE Financial Corp. (Virginia and Kuwait), one of three judges in the Appeal Board of the Shariah Court, Director of the Association of Islamic Religious Scholars and Teachers of Singapore (PERGAS) and Chairman of PERGAS’s Financial Shariah Advisory Council (FSAC). He has been elected to be in the Asatizah Recognition Board (ARB).
Awang Hj Dennie Hj Abdullah
Awang Haji Dennie bin Haji Abdullah holds a Masters in Islamic Studies (Syariah) from the National University of Malaysia (University Kebangsaan Malaysia) and an undergraduate degree in Islamic law (Syariah Islamiah) from the Al Azhar University, Egypt. Since 2004, he is appointed as the Senior Istinbat Officer at the State Mufti’s Office, Prime Minister’s Office, Brunei Darussalam. He is also a member of Perbadanan Tabung Amanah Islam Brunei (TAIB)’s Syariah Advisory Committee. Awang Haji Dennie was awarded “Pingat Indah Kerja Baik (P.I.K.B)” in 2005 and “Darjah Setia Negara Brunei Yang Amat Bahagia Darjah Keempat (P.S.B)” in 2010 by His Majesty The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam.
